Quarters. A time to muster, to collect or assemble, to be counted, inspected, or prepared for activity.

Rarely held underway, but routine in port, quarters was the start of our working day.

"Atten-hut!"

"All division personnel present or accounted for, sir", was the expected report.

Once the head count was complete, it was time for official business. Shipwide events like promotions, advancement, or most importantly, qualification in submarines, called for mustering for quarters on the pier, so the whole ship's company could be present and share in the excitement.

Shipwide business and announcements completed, quarters broke into small divisional groups so the chief or division head could give you the skinny on the day's happenings. Five or ten minutes of discussion, questions and answers, and then it was time to turn to.

Here in the Quarters section, are all the personnel related activities and information. The Master Sailing List identifies every person that was ever assigned permanent duty on the USS William H. Bates, and what their current status is. The list is not complete, but we have identified over 1200 sailors, primarily through the hard work of Mark Gray, and it improves every day, and gets better with your help. Each of you is expected to review the list - you can sort by dates on board, and see who is missing, and update the list yourself, or contact the Missing Shipmate Coordinator to make sure that no one is left off.

The Master Sailing List is also sorted to show only missing shipmates - a quick way to see if you know anyone that is still unaccounted for.

We also list all the registered users on the SSN-680.org website. You can sort by a variety of mechanisms and clicking on a name takes you to the User Profile for that registered user, where you can learn about their history, and contact them by email.

That pretty much takes care of the Quarters tour. It is the place to start to locate your old shipmates.

"Any questions? If not, then the on-coming duty section can fall out and relieve the watch. That is all."

"Atten-hut! Dismissed!"

You must be registered and logged in to view the Master Sailing List.
