March 4, 1938 - October 23, 2018

Portsmouth, NH

Manuel "Manny" Chavez, 80, born March 4, 1938, in San Vicente, Libmanan, Camarine Sur, Philippines, son of Zacarias and Felicidad (Cocatana) Chavez, died October 23, 2018.

In 1959, Manny joined the US Navy, which brought him to Boston, where he met and married Marilyn Gogan. They settled in Portsmouth where they raised their four children. Manny was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to all.

During his 28-year Navy career, Manny served on 11 submarines, often commuting from far away duty stations so that his family could remain in Portsmouth. He achieved the rank of Master Chief, E9, but reluctantly had to give up on his wish for his family to refer to him as “Master.”

He was a member of the DAV, Toastmasters, the Thresher Base United States Submarine Veterans (Holland Club, for those who qualified in submarines at least 50 years ago), and the Filipino American Friendship Society. For many years he volunteered with the DAV to drive Veterans to their doctor appointments all over New England. Recently, he worked as a translator for fellow Filipinos in courtroom and hospital settings.

02 manny chavezManny kept busy after his retirement. He loved his garden and was known for giving away arrangements of his beautiful flowers. He was a regular at the Spinnaker Point morning exercise classes, followed by coffee with the guys at Panera. Manny was a great cook, but never learned to scale down his meals to feed just his family of six instead of a whole submarine crew! He loved to be the first to compliment the cook (even if it was himself) with "Good Supper, first one to say it!" He ran the kitchen for St. Catherine's Fall Festival, and for years he tended all the flower gardens at the church.

Give the man a microphone - whether it was karaoke or speaking for one of his various groups/associations, Manny never had to be coaxed into public speaking, and loved to entertain the crowd with his jokes and stories.

Manny was predeceased by his parents and brothers Rogelio (Minda) and Arturo. He is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 56 years, and their family: Mary Kay and children Andrew (Sarah) and Molly, and their father David; John, his wife Mary, and children Madolyn, Jacey, and Jobin; Mark, his wife LeeAnn, and daughter Marissa; and Michael, his wife Michelle, and son Manny. Manny is also survived by his siblings Irene (Ron) Gackle, Amparo (Carding) Registrado, Ofelia (Romeo) Bayhon, Lolita (John) Drabinowicz, Amadeo (Marjorie) Chavez, Edgardo (Jhosee) Chavez, many nieces and nephews, and his large extended family in the Philippines.

Sailor, rest your oar!
